– A known good speaker cable

Step 3: Set Your Multimeter

Set your multimeter to the DC voltage mode, which is typically marked with a “V” and a “+” symbol. This mode is suitable for measuring the voltage difference between the two speaker wires.

Step 4: Connect the Multimeter Leads

Connect the red lead of the multimeter to one of the speaker wires. This wire is typically the positive lead, indicated by a longer screw terminal or a “+” symbol on the speaker terminal. Connect the black lead of the multimeter to the other speaker wire, which is usually the negative lead.

Step 5: Test the Speaker

With the multimeter leads connected, turn on your amplifier or headphones and play a piece of music with a distinct rhythm or pattern. Observe the movement of the speaker cone. If the speaker cone moves in the correct direction, the polarity is correct. If the speaker cone moves in the opposite direction, the polarity is reversed.

Step 6: Reverse the Leads

If the speaker cone moves in the opposite direction, reverse the multimeter leads. Connect the red lead to the other speaker wire and the black lead to the previously connected wire. Play the music again and observe the speaker cone movement. If the cone moves in the correct direction now, you have successfully corrected the polarity.

Step 7: Reconnect the Speaker

Once you have confirmed the correct polarity, reconnect the speaker to the amplifier or audio source and enjoy your audio system with proper polarity.
