How to Map SharePoint Folder to Windows Explorer

In today’s digital workplace, SharePoint has become an essential tool for collaboration and document management. However, accessing SharePoint folders directly from Windows Explorer can significantly enhance productivity and streamline workflows. Mapping a SharePoint folder to Windows Explorer allows users to navigate and manage their documents with ease, just as they would with local files. In this article, we will guide you through the process of mapping a SharePoint folder to Windows Explorer on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Step 1: Open File Explorer

To begin, open File Explorer on your Windows computer. You can do this by clicking on the File Explorer icon on the taskbar or by pressing the Windows key + E.

Step 2: Access SharePoint Site

In the File Explorer window, click on the “This PC” or “Computer” icon on the left-hand side. Then, in the address bar at the top, type the URL of your SharePoint site, followed by “/Shared Documents” or the specific folder path you want to map. For example, “https://yoursharepointsite.com/Shared Documents”.

Step 3: Enter Credentials

When you navigate to the SharePoint site, you will be prompted to enter your credentials. Enter your SharePoint username and password, and then click “OK” to access the site.

Step 4: Map the Folder

Once you have accessed the SharePoint folder, right-click on the folder you want to map and select “Map Network Drive” from the context menu. This will open the “Map Network Drive” dialog box.

Step 5: Choose a Drive Letter

In the “Map Network Drive” dialog box, you will see a list of available drive letters. Choose a drive letter that is not already in use on your computer. For example, you can select “Z:”.

Step 6: Set the Folder Path

Next, enter the full path to the SharePoint folder in the “Folder” field. This should be the same path you entered in Step 2. If you want to map the entire Shared Documents folder, you can simply use “/Shared Documents”.

Step 7: Connect Using Different Credentials

If you want to connect to the SharePoint folder using different credentials than your current Windows account, check the “Connect using different credentials” box. This will allow you to enter the username and password for the SharePoint folder.

Step 8: Click Finish

After setting the drive letter and folder path, click “Finish” to map the SharePoint folder to Windows Explorer. The folder will now appear under the “Network Location” section in File Explorer, with the assigned drive letter.

Step 9: Access the Mapped Folder

To access the mapped SharePoint folder, simply open File Explorer and click on the drive letter you assigned in Step 5. You can now navigate and manage your documents as if they were stored locally on your computer.

Mapping a SharePoint folder to Windows Explorer can greatly simplify your workflow and improve collaboration within your organization. By following these steps, you can easily access and manage your SharePoint documents directly from Windows Explorer.
