How to Change Quick Access in File Explorer

File Explorer is a crucial tool for navigating and managing files on your Windows computer. One of its most convenient features is Quick Access, which provides quick access to frequently used folders, recently opened files, and commonly used locations. However, you might want to customize Quick Access to suit your specific needs. In this article, we will guide you through the process of how to change Quick Access in File Explorer.

1. Open File Explorer

First, you need to open File Explorer. You can do this by clicking on the File Explorer icon on the taskbar, pressing the Windows key + E, or searching for “File Explorer” in the Start menu.

2. Access Quick Access settings

Once File Explorer is open, click on the “View” tab at the top of the window. In the “Layout” group, you will find the “Options” button. Click on it to open the File Explorer Options dialog box.

3. Navigate to the Quick Access settings

In the File Explorer Options dialog box, go to the “General” tab. Here, you will find the “Show the following folders in Quick Access” section. This is where you can manage the folders that appear in Quick Access.

4. Customize Quick Access

By default, File Explorer shows several folders in Quick Access, such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Music. To change this, you can do the following:

  • To add a folder to Quick Access, click on the “Add” button and navigate to the folder you want to add. Click “OK” to add it to the list.
  • To remove a folder from Quick Access, select the folder from the list and click on the “Remove” button.
  • To reorder the folders in Quick Access, select a folder and use the up and down arrows to move it to the desired position.

5. Manage recently opened files

In addition to folders, Quick Access also displays recently opened files. If you want to change this setting, go back to the “General” tab in the File Explorer Options dialog box. In the “Open File Explorer to” section, you can choose whether to open File Explorer to Quick Access or to a specific folder, such as This PC.

6. Reset Quick Access

If you want to reset Quick Access to its default settings, go back to the “General” tab in the File Explorer Options dialog box. Click on the “Reset to defaults” button to restore the default folders and recently opened files.

By following these steps, you can easily customize Quick Access in File Explorer to suit your preferences. This will help you save time and make file management more efficient.
