How to Change Key Battery Ford Explorer

Changing the key battery in a Ford Explorer is a relatively simple task that can be done at home with the right tools and a bit of patience. Whether your key fob is acting up or you simply want to replace the battery for peace of mind, follow these steps to ensure a smooth and successful battery replacement.

First, gather the necessary tools and materials. You will need a flathead screwdriver, a Phillips head screwdriver, a new key battery (CR2032 is commonly used), and a clean, soft cloth. It’s also a good idea to have a replacement key on hand in case you need it.

Start by locating the key fob cover on your Ford Explorer. This is typically found on the driver’s side door. Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the cover off, being careful not to damage it. Set the cover aside on a clean surface.

Next, use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the key fob housing. Once the screws are out, carefully slide the housing off the key fob, revealing the key fob itself.

Locate the battery compartment on the key fob. It is usually marked with a small battery symbol. Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the battery holder open, then carefully remove the old battery. Be sure to hold the battery by its edges to avoid damaging the contacts.

Insert the new battery into the compartment, making sure it is oriented correctly. The positive (+) side of the battery should face the battery symbol on the key fob. Once the battery is in place, close the battery holder and secure it with the flathead screwdriver.

Reassemble the key fob housing by sliding it back onto the key fob and replacing the two screws. Carefully snap the key fob cover back onto the door, ensuring it is secure.

Test the key fob to make sure the battery change was successful. If the key fob is working properly, you have successfully changed the key battery in your Ford Explorer. If not, double-check the battery orientation and ensure that the battery holder is properly secured.

Remember to keep your new battery in a safe place, as you may need it for future replacements. With these simple steps, you can easily change the key battery in your Ford Explorer and enjoy a fully functional key fob again.
