How to Make a Radio Transmitter and Receiver

Materials Needed

1. A wooden box or plastic container for the receiver

4. A 9V battery clip for both the transmitter and receiver
5. A 1N34A Germanium diode for the receiver
6. A 1KΩ resistor for the receiver
7. A 100nF capacitor for the receiver
8. A 10uF electrolytic capacitor for the receiver
9. A 100uF electrolytic capacitor for the transmitter
10. A 1uH inductor for the transmitter
11. A 1uF capacitor for the transmitter
12. A wire for the antenna
13. A 1N4001 diode for the transmitter
14. A 1KΩ resistor for the transmitter
15. A 100nF capacitor for the transmitter
16. A crystal earpiece or headphones for the receiver
17. A piece of wire for the ground connection

Building the Transmitter

1. Cut the wooden or plastic box to fit the components.
2. Attach the 1uH inductor and the 1uF capacitor in series to create the oscillator circuit.
3. Connect the 1N4001 diode and the 1KΩ resistor in series, and then connect this circuit to the 100nF capacitor.
4. Attach the 100uF electrolytic capacitor to the battery clip and connect it to the oscillator circuit.
5. Connect the antenna wire to the 1uH inductor and secure it to the box.

Building the Receiver

1. Cut the wooden or plastic box to fit the components.
2. Attach the 1N34A Germanium diode to the 1KΩ resistor, creating a simple rectifier circuit.
3. Connect the 100nF capacitor and the 10uF electrolytic capacitor in parallel to create a filter circuit.
4. Attach the crystal earpiece or headphones to the filter circuit.
5. Connect the ground wire to the box.

Testing Your Radio Transmitter and Receiver

1. Place the transmitter and receiver in close proximity to each other.
2. Power on the transmitter and receiver using the 9V batteries.
3. Adjust the receiver’s volume until you can hear the signal from the transmitter.
