How Long Before Abraham Received the Promise?
The story of Abraham is one of the most significant narratives in the Bible, as it marks the beginning of God’s covenant with humanity. Central to this story is the promise God made to Abraham, which would ultimately lead to the birth of his descendants and the establishment of the nation of Israel. The question that often arises is: How long before Abraham received the promise?
The journey of Abraham, as recorded in the book of Genesis, spans several decades. Abraham was called by God to leave his homeland and journey to a land that He would show him (Genesis 12:1). This initial call from God was a pivotal moment in Abraham’s life, setting him on a path of faith and obedience. However, the promise of descendants and the land of Canaan was not immediately fulfilled.
After leaving Haran, Abraham traveled to Canaan, where he lived for a time, but the promise remained unfulfilled. In Genesis 15, we find Abraham in a state of uncertainty and doubt. He asks God, “How long will it be before I know that I will inherit the land?” (Genesis 15:5). God responds by reaffirming the promise and promising to give Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:5).
Despite this assurance, the promise still seemed distant. Abraham and Sarah were childless, and the promise of descendants seemed impossible. It was not until many years later, when Abraham was 100 years old, that God fulfilled the promise by granting him a son, Isaac (Genesis 21:1-7). This event marked the first significant fulfillment of the promise God had made to Abraham.
However, the full extent of the promise was yet to be realized. The land of Canaan was still occupied by other nations, and Abraham’s descendants were not yet a great nation. It was not until the birth of Jacob, Abraham’s grandson, that the promise began to take shape more visibly. Jacob had twelve sons, who would become the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis 35:23-26).
